This post is about cable storage ideas to help keep your cords tidy and organized.
In this post, youll find genius cable storage ideas, and cable management ideas, that will have your space feeling clean. Youll be a cable management PRO!
Stop where youre at and take a look around your house. Chances are there are a handful of charging cables and other cords connecting technology in your line of sight.
Every piece of technology comes with cables, and over the years these can tend to pile up whether theyre extra cables or you just havent found the best way to hide the ones in use.
Good news today Im going to be discussing ALL of that and more. My husband is all about technology. It doesnt matter whether its ethernet, HDMI, or a random cable Ive never heard of, he seems to have them all (and plenty of extras for each).
And if you know me, you know that I like a really neat and tidy house, that includes all cables are managed and/or have their own little home
These ideas will help get your cables managed, and your space looking clean and cable-free as well!
Here are the topics Ill be talking about around cable storage ideas and cable management ideas:
Best Cable Management Ideas
Maybe you work from home and have cables taking over your workspace, or hanging below your desk like vines. Or maybe you just want a better grasp on all cords behind your TV stand.
How do you make a cable tidy? How do you make cables look nice? These questions and more will be answered in this section! Ill cover cable ties, how to hide cables, power strips for organizing, and labeling your cables.
Regardless of your situation, here is a list of items that will help get your cable management on point!
Tie up those cables
1. Velcro Cable Ties
These velcro cable ties could be your ultimate answer to cable management. You can use these in multiple scenarios. If you have multiple cables running alongside one another, group them all together with these.
We have a Cat5 system throughout our house (which allows for ethernet to go to each room), however, the main box was a mess. I used these to loop up the cables to make them nice and get them up out of the way.
Plus this is a great solution for if you need to move cables around. Since its velcro, you can simply take it off, remove the needed cable, and then put it back on. So easy!
2. Zip Ties
If you are not moving your cables around a whole lot, you can go with the classic zip tie approach. I dont think I need to explain zip ties, but they are also perfect for getting cables nice and tight together for a more permanent solution even though zip ties can always be cut when needed
3. Magnetic Cable Ties
Depending on your preference, magnetic cable ties could be perfect for you! The fact that they are magnetic is cool and all, but these ones are also multi-colored so you can easily identify cords from one another.
These would be great for having to coil up cables for storage, or even wind up that unnecessarily long cable on your countertop or desk.
Hide cables out of sight
4. Adhesive Cord Holders
If youre trying to run cords on the back of a desk, down the side of a cabinet, etc., then these are for you! They are adhesive so you just peel and stick where you need them, and then push your cable into the slot and youre good to go. Just a heads up, I only recommend these on small to medium-sized cords.
We used these on my husbands butcher block desk in his office, and they are really amazing for getting those cables going exactly where you want them! If you have a charger for a MacBook, the thicker end is what Id consider a medium-sized cord which will be perfect.
5. In-Wall Cable Management (you NEED this!)
Let me start off by saying this product is as INSANELY good as it is smart. Especially for those trying to hide TV cables connecting your TV to the outlet below. If you know nothing about electricity and dont want to pay a contractor, this is your solution! Honestly probably my fav on this list.
All you need is a drill, as it comes with a hole saw (the round thing that will cut the perfect hole in the wall).
It hides all of those cables running down your wall, including HDMI and AV cables. This is a genius solution to a cable tornado, thats what I like to call it ;), that I see in a lot of homes.
ECHOGEAR has incredible products, so dont just stop here, check out the rest of their stuff!
Uh ohcut a hole in the wrong spot and need to patch it? Ive got you covered! Check out my post, How to Fix a Hole in the Wall.
6. On-Wall Cable Raceway Kit
Trying to group a handful of cables together on the wall that are all going to the same place? Then the cable raceway might be a good product for you. This adhesive tube can stick to the wall in the exact formation you decide.
It can fit up to 4 medium-sized cables PLUS its paintable to blend into the wall and never be seen. I mean hey, thats better than seeing 4 cables running down the wall!
If desired, all you need is a handsaw to completely customize the exact length to get your raceway looking perfect.
Plug em in!
7. Tessan Power Strip (6 Outlets, 3 USB)
Something very important when considering cable management ideas, is having a good power strip to begin with. My husband and I just got this and Ive gotta say, this power strip is done very well!
The outlets are spaced a little further than most, which is convenient when you have wider chargers and plugs, plus it has 3 USB ports for charging phones or any other accessories.
A pretty good option for desks, TV stands, or nightstands.
8. Rotating Power Strip with Cable Clips
If you need a power strip but youre sick of having to skip outlets simply because your plugs are too big, look no further! This power strip has rotating outlets so that you can use every single outlet regardless of the shape of what youre plugging in.
PLUS it has cable clips attached to it specifically for good cable management!
9. GE 6 Outlet Power Strip
In most scenarios, this will be your go-to power strip. I have these throughout my home and they have never let me down!
Two things I love about them: 1) The plug is flat and goes off to the side so it easily fits behind furniture and doesnt block the other outlet, and 2) The cord comes in a variety of lengths so you can get it perfect for wherever you need it.
10. Tessan Outlet Splitter
If you dont need that many outlets and want something thats a little more compact, this will do the trick! This little splitter gives you 5 outlets, and 3 USB charging ports. Plus its a surge protector so you never have to worry about your technology getting fried in a power outage.
I have a couple of these around my house and they are super convenient I love how small they are while still giving me extra outlets to plug devices into.
Labels
11. Velcro Wire Tags
These are super nice wire tags so that youll always know which wire is which. Since these come in several different colors, not only can you write on them, but youll be able to remember the cords by color too.
Theyre velcro so just wrap it around the cord, press firmly, and youre already looking like a cable management pro.
12. Self Adhesive Cable Labels
If youre looking for more of a clean look, these white labels will be great! Plus it comes with a marker to write on them. BUT if you are a little more tech-savvy, you can actually put these labels through the printer and print the names of your cords on them instead of writing.
I use labels with my cat5 system throughout my house. There are so many cables that its nearly impossible to know which wire goes to which room, so having these cable labels makes a world of difference.
13. Painters Tape
The simplest label of all: classic painters tape! Sure its blue, and it might not officially be a label, but if youre someone that just wants to label and be done, then this option isnt half bad. And you might already have this item in your house, which is another bonus!
Best Cable Storage Ideas
What about those extra cables that are nice to have around just in case you need them, but you want them out of sight, out of mind?
Reaching into a box and pulling out 10 different cables in a tangled mess isnt the most fun thing you could be doing. Save some time, and stay organized with your cable storage.
How do you store lots of cables? There are plenty of different cable storage ideas out there, but here are some that I either use myself or highly recommend for you!
14. Storage Cart
Let me just start by saying in terms of cable storage ideas, this has to be the best! I own one of these and have labeled all drawers based on what types of cables are in each drawer.
If youre asking how do you organize extra cables and cords? This is absolutely your answer!
Its not huge so it can fit in a closet or even out in the open if you desire. You can use the velcro ties that I listed earlier, and nicely place your cables, chargers, charging blocks, and even extension cords in it! Theres plenty of storage for chargers and cables.
I like that the bottom drawers are a little bigger to give you more options if you need the space. Definitely a must when it comes to cable storage!
15. Charging Cable Storage Box
This charger storage box is a GREAT idea for those with loads of iPhone charging cords, or really any type of small cables, that need a home until you need them. Maybe you have a drawer with plenty of charging cables all tangled together well this will eliminate that issue completely!
Pair it with one of the cable tie options from earlier in the post.
16. Cable Travel Organizer
The cable travel organizer is perfect for someone constantly on the move, needing to bring a bunch of different cables for charging. It can even hold your iPad or any other tech accessories youre bringing along for the ride.
This could even be nice if you simply just want to keep your cables nice and tidy in a closet you definitely dont have to be on the go to take advantage of this cable storage idea!
17. 6 Drawer Cable Storage
Another version of the cable storage cart, but with less storage if you dont need it. I typically err on the side of you never know how many cables will continue to pile up, so I like to go with more storage (hence why I ended up going with a storage cart for my cable storage). Especially if you have a techy in your house!
But if you know that you arent going to need the extra space, this will definitely do the job of storing your cables.
18. mDesign Plastic Stackable Storage
This option is great if you already have a place youre thinking about storing cables, such as a shelf. These stackable containers from my all-time favorite organization company, mDesign, will act like little cubbies for all of your different cables. Or you can stack them on the floor in your closet or workspace.
Get some labels and label each container for the different types of cables youre storing. These make for some great cable storage ideas!
How to Organize Charging Cables on a Desk (Desk Cable Management)
Desk organization is extremely important. With more people working from home than ever, chances are you have a desk that could use a little bit of help from an organizational standpoint.
Whether its charging cables, or just keeping all of your computer cables nice and neat for a distraction-free workspace, these are some amazing ideas that you have got to try! Even if you are still going into the office, these tips can still be useful for your desk space!
19. Anker Cable Management
This product is wildly clever and can take your desk cable management to the next level. Made for 5 charging cables, you simply lock in your charging cables, and thats it!
The blocks that your cords snap into are magnetic, so you can pull them away when you need them, but then put them back home when youre not. That way your charging cables are organized, and theyre no longer falling behind your desk!
20. Cable Clip
Another version of cable management on the desk is this nifty little cable clip. It has 11 slots made specifically for charging cables perfect!
21. Cable Holder
Yet another version of a cable clip, just really based on what you like best!
22. Under Desk Cable Tray
Cable management under a desk can help make your desk look super organized. Remember the cable tornado? Time after time I see this happening where the cords are visibly tangled and running down the wall.
I used 2 of these cable management trays on my husbands DIY butcher block desk and let me say, it looks SO good. One of the best cable storage ideas for your desk!
23. USB 4 Port Switch
Need more USB ports on your computer? Instead of continuously interchanging your cords, unplugging, and plugging back in, use a switch like this to make your life easier.
Plug in 4 different USB devices such as a keyboard, mouse, etc. Just remember, this is not for charging, its simply for devices needing to be connected to your laptop.
My husband and I both have one and they are amazing and make things a lot easier!
24. Desk Power Grommet
Now if youre looking to get even more fancy and efficient with your desk, this power grommet is such a good idea for cable management. You can go to the hardware store and buy a hole saw and make a hole in your desk specifically for this. Dont be afraid of the work, its easy and will be so worth it in the end.
That way right there on your desk surface you have 2 power outlets, and 2 USB and 1 USB-C charging areas. This is truly a genius idea if you choose to make a DIY desk, or for any desk that youre looking to upgrade!
Dont forget those charging cables!
Amazon Basics has been the best charging cable we have purchased, even better than the ones that come with your iPhone. The cable is nylon and they have a rubber neck near the ends so that your cables are never splitting open exposing the wires.
In other words, they seem to last a very long time Ive been using mine for years with no issues!
Do yourself a favor and get the 6-foot cables, that way youre not leaning over the side of the couch trying to use your phone while its charging
All cables come in a variety of colors.
Apple (USB-A to Lightning)
Apple (USB-C to Lightning)
Android (USB-C to USB-C)
Apple 20W Power Block (USB-C)
I like to stick with Apple Power Blocks for charging my phone. Ive had too many issues with other brands and knock-offs, that Ive decided these are the most reliable and ultimately the best way to go.
Apple 12W Power Block (USB-A)
This post was all about cable storage ideas and cable management to help keep your cables tidy and out of the way.
Hopefully, you found some inspiration from these genius cable storage ideas!
Cable storage is a game-changer. Not only does cable organization help keep your cables up and out of the way, but it also helps keep your cords ready for whenever you want to use them next!
